The Hang Seng Index (HSI) is the internationally recognized indicator of stock market of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK). The HSI is a free float capitalization weighted index of selected companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. The index was developed on 31 July 1964, with an initial baseline set at 100 for their 30 companies that comprise it. The HSI was launched as a public service in 1969. The Hang Seng index is compiled, published and managed by Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank, a leading member of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).
The Chinese characters for Hang Seng translated as "growing." The constituent stocks of the HSI are selected through a rigorous screening process. Only listed companies main on the main board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong can be used as components of the Hang Seng index. Companies in the index to play important roles in Hong Kong's economy as evidenced by the listing requirements: The company must be among the companies that constitute the top 90 percent of the total market value of all eligible shares listed in Sehk (market value is expressed as the average of the last 12 months) and should be among the companies that constitute the top 90 per cent of total sales revenue of all eligible shares listed on the Sehk (sales revenue is aggregated and individually assessed for eight quarterly sub-periods in the last 24 months) and usually have a history list of at least 24 months to comply with the requirements of a list of combinations of market value and the contribution period.
The Hang Seng Composite Index aims to cover 90 percent of the market capitalization of stocks listed on the main board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. There are currently 200 shares held. Constituent stocks must not be more than 20 trading days, no sales revenue in the last 12 months, excluding the days when the population has suspended trading turnover (screening), and after the turnover projection, the 200 stocks in terms of average market capitalization over the past 12 months have been selected as the constituents. The final selection of companies in the HSI is based on the following additional criteria: the market value and sales income classification of businesses; the representation of sub-sectors reflects the HSI market and financial performance of companies. Total market capitalization of the HIS is about HK $ 15,000 million or 10 times the gross proceeds of domes Hong Kong ICT. The companies (now 43) in the HSI are divided into four sub-indices that represent particular economic sectors: Industry and Commerce, Finance, Property, and utilities. Some of these companies are Hutchison Whampoa (trade and industry), Bank of East Asia (finance), Cheung Kong (property), and CLP HOLDINGS (utilities).

Since 8 July 2008, the Hang Seng index value was 23,872.43. Its 52-week high was 24,195.32, and his 52-under week was 23,858.89. Companies of mainland China (in the Currently 45 companies) that have H-share price in Hong Kong are also eligible for inclusion in the Hang Seng Index (HSI), when they meet any of the following conditions: (1) H-corporation is 100 percent of its ordinary share capital in the form of H shares are listed on the Sehk, (2) the H-stock company has completed the reform process sharing, without capital is not traded on the enterprise, or (3) for the new H-initial public offerings (IPO), the company has no capital unlisted securities.
