Where is the money to be made W / Crisis Loan?

I see many similarities to the loan market now to what happened during the savings and loan crisis of the 80s. I was not there to see what opportunities were then and where the money went, and I wonder if anyone here does. Was the purchase of the properties deprecaited? was there certain types of securities to buy? Gold was up? If I were a trader, I would see companies that are heavily exposed to risky debt of any kind, and SHORT sale. People get hung up on what to buy. Imagine if you had a short circuit few subprime lenders?
