annual stock market returns historical

When the web you can find a table showing the historical performance of the total population of the U.S. market?
I'm looking for performance Total annual market, or at least the S & P 500 components, for a long term (60 years or more) expressed as percentage of total return.
Three general directions of the parts of this information. Value Line makes your business keeping business information in the long term. The Dow Jones also does that, and a good fit can be achieved in the Wall Street Journal and its Web service called MarketWatch. The S & P500 information can be found directly, by their BusinessWeek period in its sister organization (available from Standard & Poor's, but even more involved.) Each of these, to some extent (Some with very little) have some free data, but most generally all good, you have to pay more for access. Otherwise, check out some of web sites of business schools, there may be links to statistics or students who are proud of the investigation when they have researched this to the class (as if perhaps? Eh?).
